Today’s topic: Outdoor Patio Spaces!!
By now I am pretty sure most of y’all know how much I LOVE the outdoors! Pretty much all of my interior work is a reflection of something I saw in nature that I wanted to recreate in the home. It’s amazing to me to see the beauty of the world God designed and to have the chance everyday to translate that beauty into interior design. With that said, between my love for nature and love for people, today’s blog is probably one of my all time faves!! Today we are talking outdoor patio spaces!
There is nothing that makes my heart fuller than a big yard full of friends, family, and food! Whether it’s a raw wood pergola, hand crafted farm table, or a fire pit, there is just something about a back yard that is so magical! My ultimate secret ingredient for the perfect patio space is community. For me, it’s all about the people. The loved ones you share meals, life, and memories with. My corn hole obsessed husband and his friends relentlessly throwing bean bags, sipping coffee with my girlfriends while sharing silly stories, and my larger than life puppy stealing food & kisses – backyards mean one thing to me – H O M E.
The first step to creating a stellar outdoor patio space is a show stopping table. My ultimate go-to for this is a farm style table. Don’t get me wrong, you can choose any table you fancy, but for this South Carolina girl, there’s nothing that can quite beat a big, chunky, wooden farm table. My love for farm style tables comes from my Pepaw. He crafts them with meticulous detail and he is pretty much a legend. Made with love by his salty calloused hands, his tables will always hold the award for handmade perfection in my heart. When it comes to patio spaces, this is one of the most important parts. The table acts as a base – it’s the foundation you will build the rest of your space around. So pick a good one, don’t skimp here! Bite the bullet and get a sturdy, weather durable, high quality table. Trust me, it’s worth it.
Next are lights. Not even kidding. Patio lights are one of the most essential pieces to creating that magazine worthy backyard. My favorite are edison style bulbs, but there are a ton to choose from now-a-days! A little décor tip – you can actually pick up GREAT quality outdoor lights from Marshalls & TJ Maxx for half the price you will pay somewhere else! You can hang them, drape them, or string them up in trees - you really can’t go wrong with these! Another great way to add light to your patio space is tiki torches and lanterns. Here in Florida, tiki torches are a MUST because they not only add warm light, but they also help keep away those awful bugs! I love the glow of the flame and the way the light dances in lanterns, plus they even look cute when they aren’t lit!
Another major factor in cozy outdoor spaces is where you sit. Chairs, love seats, and ottomans play a huge role in making your patio space feel more like home. I myself tend to steer more towards comfort in this area, because let’s be honest, who wants to hang out outside if your butt hurts the whole night? NOT I! If you find something you love, but it may not be the coziest booty rest-er on the block, you can always add some coziness with blankets & pillows. For my patio space, I fell in LOVE with these boho rattan chairs, but they weren’t exactly “butt-friendly.” So, to add a little comfort, I grabbed a fun yellow blanket and some pillows. Whatever seat style you go with, adding pillows and blankets will not only add a little cozy element, but they also help add color and can be easily changed year round to spruce things up!
Last, but certainly not least, are plants. Planters, pots, hanging herb gardens, whatever you gravitate towards, just put some green out there - it IS nature for goodness sake! With my crazy life, high maintenance plants are a definite DON’T, so I tend to pick plants that don’t require a ton of attention (cactuses, succulents...) things I can’t kill! They do exist - I swear. I have forgotten my dear cactus many a time and he is still going strong living on love & sunshine! The more the merrier on this one because there isn’t really such thing as “too many plants” outside. For a little inspo, I’ve shared some of my favorite looks below!
Hope these tips help make your patio season a little brighter - full of love, laughter, & life! I would love to hear about what’s inspiring your patio this year! Feel free to share below in our comments section.
