Choosing the Right Light Fixtures

There are a few items that we will plan an entire room around: a great rug, a wonderful wallpaper, and great light fixtures.

At Fig Leaf + Co., we know that lighting makes a statement and takes a home from feeling ho-hum to elevated and professionally designed. And luckily, our Mt. Pleasant interior design clients love a statement light.

That’s why you won’t catch us buying Lowe’s brushed nickel pieces for over the bathroom mirror or crystal chandeliers for the entryway.

Lighting is a bright way to show off your creativity and style.

It literally sets the mood for everything that you do in the room. Maybe you need bright light for the bathroom to pluck those stray hairs from your eyebrows. In the kitchen, you can hopefully get plenty of natural light and just have to be choosy about decorative accents.

The entryway and dining rooms are great places for lighting that adds the “WOW!” factor, of course, but we also love to add beautiful lighting in unexpected places: over a clawfoot tub or a breakfast nook, for example.

Don’t be afraid to play with texture and shop for antiques.

If you start with an amazing light fixture that you love, you can tie it in in a myriad of ways—maybe with a rug with similar colors, pillows or upholstery with similar texture, or just balancing a particularly romantic or boho piece with structure or clean lines.

Use playful lights in kids’ spaces.

Kids’ spaces in particular are great for using color and funky textures—even in lighting! We love to take an elevated space and add something playful to convey that, hey! A kid lives here. Think: a candy pink desk lamp, dinosaur shaped nightlights, or fun pendants above the bathroom mirrors.
