The Perfect Living Room Layout

The living room is the heart of the home where cherished memories are made, relaxation takes center stage, and personal style finds expression. Designing the perfect living room is not a one-size-fits all scenario because what matters most is who lives there and how they use it.

That said, we have a few considerations and nuggets of wisdom from our expert team of interior designers to share!

Got Kids or Pets? Performance Fabric is your Best Friend.

Here’s why we love performance fabric: it’s easier to clean (in some cases, even washable) and still very comfortable. Don’t stress over literal spilled milk or muddy puppy paws. You can take it all in stride because we’ve chosen durable fabrics!

Love to Entertain? Create Conversation Spaces.

We’re not here to tell you that you can’t put a TV over your mantle. If that’s what your family prioritizes, it’s fine! However, we do encourage all of our clients to create spaces that promote conversation and not just have every single seat positioned to stare at the game.

Consider two chairs or loveseats that face each other by a window. It’s the perfect place to catch up or play board games. Pro tip: leave 2-3 feet of clearance behind any seat for walking, and perhaps more in high traffic areas.

Emphasize your Personal Style

When designing your living room, one of the most important things to us is that it feels like YOU. We infuse personality through statement pieces: a structural coffee table, an accent wall with a vibrant wallpaper, or just some amazing throw pillows can add the personality to your space.

Let’s Talk Sofas

The sofa is the largest piece of furniture in the room and we often plan the room around it. If you’re purchasing a new sofa, shape and style are hugely important to set the tone for the rest of the room. Do you have a house full of movie lovers? You’ll want a deep seat for piling all together with popcorn buckets. Is your vibe more modern? A low profile sofa with clean lines is just the ticket. Have lots of visitors but limited bedroom space? Choose a sleeper sofa or an L-shape that can accommodate a friend or two.

Measure the space you want your sofa to be and make sure that it’s not overwhelming. Older homes with low ceilings shouldn’t choose an overstuffed Rooms To Go sofa. Instead, opt for a tufted velvet or low profile performance fabric sofa. Using the elements of the sofa, a large rug, and the right color, allows us to make the room feel much bigger than it is.
